Collective fight against adversary elements stressed

Institute of Development Studies (IDS) celebrated its foundation day at Manipur Press Club, here, on Monday with retd IAS Dr Rk Nimai, IDS chairman Prof N Mohendro, All Manipur Bar Association president P Tomcha and Thangjam Agro Industries managing director Thangjam Joykumar as presidium members.
Two eminent agriculturists namely Ningthoujam Ingocha of Kumbi and A Ashia of Sen apati were felicitated with presentation of traditional stoles and citations in recognising their contribution in the field of agriculture and horticulture with new vision, skills and innovative ideas.
The congregation also observed a one-minute silence in honour of those who sacrificed their lives in the ongoing ethnic conflict in the state.
In his address, Dr Rk Nimai stated that with the ethnic conflict that broke out on May 3 last severely affecting economy of the state, there is strong apprehension on whether the different small-scale industries in the state could recoup the loss or even continue to operate.
While pointing out the necessity for resolving the conflict and developing the economy, he also stated that the violence-affected business establishments need long term and short-term financial packages.
Dr Nimai also noted that the conflict being mainly perpetrated by Kuki militants is not only armed combat but in various other forms, and called upon academicians and historians to lend support for negating intentional dissemination of false narratives.
Similarly, environmentalists should also fight the war in their own way to prevent environmental destruction, he said, adding that the conflict merits everyone to be prepared for any eventualities.
Stating that aggrieved youth have now started undergoing arms training, he continued that the government should take up initiatives by considering the future impacts of the war ignoring which the future of Manipur society would be very grim.
According to IDS chairman Prof Mohendro, the need for having an academic foundation in bringing a developed society cannot be undermined.
An academic approach should also be pursued to find solution to the present situation.
IDS not only takes up initiatives for the welfare of women entrepreneurs and farmers, but is also organising brain storming sessions regarding the present turmoil, he added.
