Imphal, June 17 2024:
Questioning why the government failed to take up pre-emptive measures in Jiribam despite inputs about movement of Kuki terrorists from Churachandpur and the prevailing unrest in the district, Thawai Mirel has remarked that the current situation in the border district is the greatest blunder of the incumbent government.
Briefing the media at Manipur Press Club, here, bn Monday, Thawai Mirel convenor Thongam Dara recounted that after the violence broke out on June 6, a team of Thawai Mirel went to Jiribam on June 12.The team along with one of the organisations visited relief camps during which it came to light that residents of camp unit 1 and 2 opened at multipurpose sports complex Bidyanagar, have been staying there since the conflict first broke out on May 3 last year.
As such, he questioned why the government failed to take up any security measures despite being aware that Jiribam denizens have been affected by the activities of Kuki terrorists.
Dara continued that in unit no 1, there are 67 people from 22 households, all from Chingkoi Pung village, previously known as Babukhan Khunou.
In unit no 2, there were 52 residents while unit no 3 housed around 239 displaced persons.
Most of the camp residents were threatened and chased away by the Kukis.
Their situation is dire but most of them expressed eagerness to return to their homes, he conveyed.
Speculating that the Jiribam district administration would be unable to provide the exact figure of people displaced in the district, except for the official record of people seeking refuge at the relief camps; Dara said that many have fled to Assam after crossing the Barak River and also to Cachar.
It is unlikely that the state government would be able to give the exact number in this regard as well, he remarked.
Chipping in, co-convenor Paonam Sanahanbi said that it was initially believed that the deployment of central forces would help at least reduce gravity of the conflict but the present situation suggests otherwise.
On top of this, the union minister has directed deployment of central forces at 55 locations, which is a matter of concern.
She then said that it is no longer the time to remain silent when a large number of central forces are to be deployed in the state.
It is time for all mothers of the state to take a final stand for protecting our children who are defending the state from the attacks of Kuki terrorists at various places, she asserted.
