Urgent need to address child trafficking underscored

Imphal, January 17 2018: A two-day orientation workshop on Child Rights and Protection for Agencies under JJ Act & ICPS in Manipur began today at the High Court of Manipur auditorium.

The workshop is jointly organised by National Institute of Public Co-operation & Child Development (NIPCCD), Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) and Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLA) .

The inaugural function was graced by Justice N Kotiswar, Acting Chief Justice, High Court of Manipur as chief guest; Sumatibala Ningthoujam, Chairperson of MCPCR as president and Dr K Saikia, Regional Director of NIPCCD, RCG as guest of honour.

Speaking at the function, Sumatibala stated that the aim of the workshop is not only to let the others know of what is going on in each institution of the concerned stakeholders for child rights but also to serve as a source of influence and inspiration for each other.

She further stated that it is widely recognised that children are right holders and important issues concerning children's rights are nowadays being put up on political agenda.

She pointed out that the very bad living conditions in the premises of the so called rehabilitation homes and low status of the concerned staff destroy its main purposes.

She mentioned that most of the children's rights are still violated randomly and recently children are increasingly becoming victims of abusing new technology mainly mobile phone.

Issue of child trafficking and pornography needs to be addressed urgently.

Many girls and boys have already been exposed to some acts of sexual violence and many are being forced to work illegally, Sumatibala noted.

She also stated that MCPCR is actively considering to propose the revision of the key decisions in order to criminalize the offenders for defending the victims and prevent the phenomenon.

She asssured that MCPCR would enhance its actions for having well protected and secured child right in the State.
