Imphal, October 01 2024:
Pointing out that the two youths held hostage by Kuki militants were abducted on their way to attend an army recruitment rally, Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL) president Lourembam Nganbi has said that the central security forces should shoulder the responsibilities of rescuing the army aspirants.
Speaking on behalf of 19 CSOs and Meira Paibi groups at Manipur Press Club here on Tuesday, Nganbi asked the central forces to do the needful for rescuing the two youths as they were abducted on their way to join army recruitment rally.
They were not apprehended during gunfight, she said.
Calling the hostage situation and raising exchange demand with prisoners an act of terrorism, Nganbi said that there had been multiple cases of Meetei civilians falling victims to the terror activities of Kuki narco-terrorists.
It is unfortunate that the Central and state governments have not been able to resolve the crisis even after 16 months.
The AMKIL president further demanded the government to publicly clarify if the hostage exchange demand with Mark T Haokip is true or false.
Irrespective of their demands, it should be the responsibility of the Central and state governments to secure the safe release of the two abducted youths, she said.
Nganbi also warned of launching intense public movement if the government fails to hand over the two youths to their family members at the earliest.
She demanded stringent action against those involved in the hostage situation.
Chipping in, All Manipur Women's Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) president Th Ramani said that the people of the state are extremely dissatisfied with the way the Central government is handling the crisis.
People are already feeling remorseful of becoming part of the Union of India and they would rather want to restore the pre-merger status if such indifferent treatment continues, she added.
