Imphal, February 28 2025:
People do not want President's Rule (PR) but there is high possibility of extension of the central rule in the state if BJP MLAs fail to unite and form a democratic government capable of protecting lives and properties of the people by March 10, stated Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief spokesperson Hareswar Goswami.
Addressing media persons at Congress Bhawan Friday, Hareswar said President's Rule has been imposed in the state on February 13 despite the BJP in power both in the state and at the Centre, stating that the same was unexpected, especially amidst the violence since May, 2023.Failure of BJP government ruled in the state before PR imposition in protecting lives and properties of the people and BJP MLAs' inability to elect a consensus leader to form a popular government were main reasons for bringing the central administration, he noted.
According to Hareswar, there is high suspicion of the present President's Rule regime lengthening further in view of the Governor planning to operate from the state secretariat.
He stressed the need for discussing the possibility of extending President's Rule if no claim to form a new government is made before March 10."In view of this, BJP MLAs must unite and form a new democratic government that can protect lives and properties of the people and this is what the Congress party wants at the moment," he pointed out, while reminding that Congress party always stood for policies to return displaced persons to their ancestral homes, free movement along national highways, safety of village volunteers and bring peace and normalcy in the state.
To a query raised on extension of deadline for surrender of arms, Hareswar Goswami replied that the step taken up by the Governor to restore peace and normalcy is encouraging but there must be update on return of arms both in the hills and the valley on daily basis.
"If there happens to be dissimilar actions in hills and valley, it could lead to another people's uprising far worse than the one in 2001 while President's Rule was imposed," he warned and stressed the need for same actions in both the hills and valley.
