May withdraw support to Govt in public interest: NPP MLA

Imphal, July 14 2024: Stating that there are many things he want to say over the way the government is dealing with the crisis in the state that began from May 3 last year, but could not comment as he is in the ruling bench, Kshetrigao MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan disclosed that the NPP may withdraw its support to the government in the interest of the people if the situation demands.

He was attending as chief guest at the political meet organised by National People's Party (NPP) Khurai Block held at the Khurai Konsam Leikai office of the Block on Sunday.

NPP Khurai Block Election Central Committee president K Prafullo presided over the meet which was also attended by National People's Youth Front (NPYF) presi dent Laitonjam Jayananda as guest of honour.

Addressing the party members and workers from different parts of Khurai assembly constituency, Noorul Hassan said that the government had already accepted its failure in containing the violence at the beginning, and it is also a public knowledge.

Besides, there are many such loopholes on the part of the government but NPP could not place such matters in the public since they are sitting in the treasury bench.

The party has been waiting for the government to rectify those mistakes and make up for the failures.

In case, the government fails to make such amendment, the party might pull out from the government in the larger interest of the people and the state, he said.

Even in the assembly session too, party's MLAs had to remain silent due to their position.

The best they could do is to assist the government in taking up necessary initiatives to control the crisis and restore peace, maintained the MLA.

He also mentioned how the party's national vice-president Yumnam Joykumar set deadline of October 3 for the govern ment to take up effective measures to restore peace, failing which the former deputy chief minister cautioned of withdrawing the party's support.

The MLA also reasoned the party's tolerance stating that hastily pulling out from the government might make the party a scapegoat in case somebody tries to take political advantage of such decision.

As such, the party will wait till October 3 and after that, they will take a firm decision for the sake of the state and its people, Noorul said.

He expressed concern over the growing tension in Jiribam district, which resulted in the death of a CRPF trooper and injury to two police personnel on Sunday.

Jiribam, which was left untouched by the crisis, has now become the latest epicentre of the 14-month long crisis and people are living in relief camps.

Illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries are creating a rift among the natives of the state who have been living peacefully.

The crisis has severe impact on the society as well as education and economy, he observed.

NPYF president Laitonjam Jayananda said that NPP ranks second in terms of number of MLAs in the state but the MLAs of the party are in a tight spot amid the unrest situation.

Despite the party's major role in forming the previous government, the party is relegated to a mere ally of BJP without a single post let alone ministerial berth, he said.

Regarding the meet, Jayananda said that this is not the typical political meet related with election but a platform to discuss the current situation and explore ways the party could contribute in restoring peace in the state.

Today, the Meetei community could not cross the valley area in all directions.

The idea of a united Manipur could not be seen anymore.

NPP became an ally of NDA because the party wants to bring development in the northeast region and became a member of NEDA.

Despite the alliance, NPP and BJP have different ideologies.

Nevertheless, the party, as an ally of NDA, has been making efforts in controlling the situation and providing suggestions to the union home minister.

Even as the party has been enduring the failure of the government, there will be a limitation and NPYF will not remain silent when that threshold is crossed.

As agreed, the party will wait till October 3 and take a firm decision for the state and its people after that, he added.
