Imphal, May 11 2024:
Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union has informed that several landless Meetei are found in the five valley districts of the state during a survey conducted by the union.
In a release, MMTU youth wing Haobijam Surjit Meetei asserted that the reason for such massive number of landless Meetei is due of the failure of Directorate of Settlement and Land Records officials to do their duty properly.
If officials conduct land survey timely, then such issues of landless Meetei will not occur, he added.
The landless people failed to get the benefits of schemes or housing loans provided by state and central government.
In addition, students coming from such families could not avail free education facility in school and colleges and could not submit forms for competitive examination because of lack of Patta, he pointed out, while adding that there are no such inconveniences in the case of other communities included in Scheduled Tribe list.
Meetei community could not be saved with the success of some candidates in UPSC, MPSC and medical examinations after rich people send their wards for education outside the state and spending huge amount of money on coaching.
The community can be saved only when the underprivileged people are supported to form an egalitarian society, Surjit maintained.
The union has begun conducting awareness programmes on the demerits of not having Patta and how to avail Patta in different areas, he informed, while urging interested localities, villages or committees who want to conduct the awareness programme to contact the union.
