Horticulture officials assess crop losses

A team of Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department led by its additional director Md Zakir Hussain on Wednesday conducted surveys to assess the damage caused to crops by the heavy rainfall and hailstorm which struck the state on May 5.The assessment team, which also included Thoubal DAO Kh Malemnganba and other officials of the department, visited different parts in Thoubal district including Wangjing, Heirok, Tentha, Langathel and Sangai-yumpham where standing crops have been severely damaged.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the visit, Md Zakir Hussain informed that the survey conducted as per the instruction of Horticulture and Soil Conservation commissioner T Pamei is aimed at assessing severity of the damage to crops by the hailstorm and compile a detailed report.
He also said that during the inspection visit, numerous crops, particularly cabbage farms, were found totally devastated.
Since cabbage is covered by crop insurance, farmers whose crops have been destroyed will receive insurance benefits from the central government.
Additionally, based on the survey report, the state government has initiated measures to offer all necessary assistance to the affected farmers, he maintained.
The additional director also said as the farmers are eligible to avail benefits under Fasal Bima Yojana, the farmers need to approach the office concerned along with informing that the inspection visits will cover other districts as well in the coming days.
