Police get custody of Dr Mark till Jun 9

Imphal, June 04 2022: The court of district and sessions judge, Imphal West remanded Dr Mark Thangmang Haokip, who was arrested on the charge of inciting communal hatred and waging war against the nation, in police custody for six days, till June 9 .

During the hearing of the case, the court said that CJM Imphal West referred the case to it as per a ruling of the Supreme Court with bail application.

On May 31, CJM Imphal West remanded Dr Mark in police custody for five days and instructed police not to produce the accused at JIC in Kangla and conduct interrogation inside police station only.

As per the case dossier, one sub-inspector of Imphal West police station submitted a report to OC of the same police station on May 30, stating that self-styled president of 'Government of People's Democratic Republic of Kukiland' Dr Mark Thangmang Haokip waged war against India in collusion with three other office bearers of the organisation namely secretary (admin) KS Kipgen, political affairs secretary Lunkhohao Haokip and press secretary CSK Mate.

Apart from this, Dr Mark Haokip also attempted to form Kukiland and spread rumours to incite communal conflict.

The report also mentioned that Mark Haokip provoked local villagers to stop mass tree plantation at Thangjing hill which almost triggered clash between two communities.

He was also responsible for the incident that took place at Koubru hill in April 2021 as well as the incident that occurred on May 21 when summon notice was issued against him and the May 25 violent incident when he was arrested from New Delhi.

IO of the case informed the court that altogether 20 different items were recovered from Mark Haokip's possession including laptop, mobile phone, pen drive and diary when he was remanded in police custody for five days, and awaiting result of investigation for some items.

Taking advantage of the CJM Imphal West court's restriction to produce him at JIC in Kangla, Mark Haokip not only refused to cooperate in the police investigation but also refused to disclose identity of his co-workers, the IO disclosed before the court and sought 10 days police custody for further questioning.

After patient hearing of both the prosecution and defence counsels, the court remanded Mark Haokip in police custody till June 9.The court also told the relevant authority to conduct medical check-up of the accused every 48 hours.

The court, however, gave no comment regarding restriction imposed by CJM Imphal West court on production of the accused before JIC, Kangla as government is preparing to move the same to the high court.
