Jiribam village comes under attack

Jiribam, January 21 2024:
After remaining mostly untouched by the present crisis in the state for several months despite having mixed population of different communities including Meetei and Kuki, Jiribam district witnessed attack with use of bombs and sophisticated weapons on Sunday morning.
The incident took place at Lamtai Khunou village under Borobekra sub-division of Jiribam district when unidentified armed miscreants launched the attack towards the village.
Luckily, the bombs did not land in residential areas and exploded in the middle of fields and foothills, at a distance of around 200 metres from the nearest residential area.
Though the bomb did not cause any serious damage to lives or public properties, people panicked and fled for safety.
A woman resident of the village said that it was the third time the village experienced armed attack.
However, the authority has not taken up any action to identify the perpetrators and take up any action.
Sunday's attack occurred shortly after a foot patrol party of CRPF passed through the village.
Later, troops of Assam Rifles and CRPF came to the area and carried out search operation.
However, no arrests were made in connection with the armed attack.
Since the village lies in the boundary of another district, they have been demanding the authority to deploy state security forces in the area.
However, there is no positive response till date.
Keeping in view of the situation, the Villagers are now considering shifting to a safer location, she said.
Later, in the afternoon, a joint meeting of the local residents along with leaders of United Jiri Youth League, Jiri Development Organisation, Hmar Inpui and senior officers of Assam Rifles, CRPF, and district police was held at Lamtai Khunou community hall.
During the meeting, Hmar Inpui assured to do its best to prevent similar incident in future and also to do the needful to identify the perpetrators.
Senior officers of CRPF and Assam Rifles also assured to beef up security measures to prevent any such incidents.
JDO president Elangbam Dewan said that this is the third time the village is facing armed attack.
People of the district want to live in peace.
JDO is thankful to Hmar Inpui for attending the meeting and giving it assurances, he said and urged the DC and SP of the district to take up necessary measures to prevent such incidents in future, and also to investigate the matter in order to maintain peace and tranquillity in the district.
