Thousands rendered homeless as Assam, Tripura & Manipur reel under floods

Imphal, June 15 2018: Even as water level at almost all major Rivers in Manipur had receded, many places in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Kakching district continued to be submerged under flood water leaving thousands of people homeless.

Many are still taking refuge at temporary relief camp open by the Government and the local body authority.

Chief Minister N.Biren Singh and his cabinet colleagues along with almost all staffs from top to bottom spent sleepless night fighting the flood and also preparing to tackle the after flood situation which is likely to be the worst in the state .

In Imphal East district, even as the water receded, houses are left in a more horrific way .Over 10 house hold were displaced in Songphel Village in Chandel district after the incessant rain in the few days creates landslide at the area.

The landslide occurred amidst Valley area of the state has been flooded.

The Chief Minister has advice the state health department to remain alert to face any outbreak of diseases in the aftermath of the flood.

Meanwhile, various MLAs, social workers club s, organisations and other individuals are also extending help to the flood affected victims.

Many houses in Thoubal district are also still submerge under water.

The state government of Manipur has declared holiday till today in all educational and government establishments in Imphal and its adjoining districts in view of the flood situation.

Police sources said, two persons drowned in swollen rivers in separate incidents.

The state officials said the water level in major rivers of Manipur is receding, but the situation continues to remain grim.

Fifteen relief camps have been set up across the state to help those affected by flood.

Manipur Chief Minister N.Biren Singh reviewed the flood situation in the State in a high-level meeting held at the Chief Minister's Secretariat the last evening.

State Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, State Chief Secretary, State Director General of Police and other senior officials looking after the departments of, relief and disaster management, water resources, consumer affairs, public health engineering, power and works attended the meeting.

The flood situation in Tripura remains critical on the third-day even as most rivers in Unokoti, Dhalai, Khowai, Gomati and South Tripura districts receded last night.

There is no report of any casualty.

The Union Home Ministry last night sent a large contingent of NDRF volunteers along with 20 advanced boats from Uttar Pradesh by an Indian Air Force carrier.

The Indian Army and other paramilitary forces were engaged in relief and rescue operations.

As many as 80 special medical teams were constituted and sent to affected areas since this morning.

The met Department has forecast heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours across Tripura.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has said that the flood situation is improving in the state.

Talking to AIR, the Chief Minister said that the water level of various rivers in the state is receding.

He also said that in Unakoti district due to the damage of embankment there is waterlogging and administration is working actively on it.

He also said that the state government has talked to the PMO and Home Minister Rajnath Singh and asked for the help.

He also said that compensation of five lakh rupees will be given to the kin of those who lost their lives due to rain and flood.

Our correspondent reports that the Chief Minister said that NDRF team has reached in the state and rescue operation is going on.

He said that a health team is put in place to provide mineral water, food, and medicines to the affected people and inmates in camps in various districts of the state.
