Plans to expand Physiotherapy Unit announced

Imphal, September 08 2026: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, celebrated the World Physiotherapy Day 2026 at the OPD Complex today.

The observance held under the theme "Role of Physiotherapy in the Prevention, Management and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke," was attended by RIMS Director Professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Medical Superintendent Professor N Sanjib Singh and Head of Physiotherapy Dr Joybi Heikrujam, physiotherapists, doctors, nurses and students.

Speaking on the occasion, Director G Sunil Kumar Sharma highlighted the growing importance of physiotherapy in comprehensive patient care and announced plans for expansion of the Physiotherapy Unit and establishment of a dedicated teaching institute at RIMS in the near future.

The proposed initiatives are expected to strengthen physiotherapy education, training, clinical services and research at the institute, he said.

The Director stressed the growing role of physiotherapy across Ortho- paedics, PMR and Sports Medicine, particularly in rehabilitation and sports injuries.

As part of the observance, exhibition stalls were opened and an awareness camp was organized.

Various physiotherapy techniques and practices related to the prevention, management and rehabilitation of cardiovascular diseases and stroke were demonstrated and displayed to create greater awareness among patients, attendants and the general public.

Participation certificates were distributed to physiotherapists.

The programme recognised valuable contributions of the physiotherapy fraternity towards strengthening multidisciplinary healthcare services at RIMS .
