Imphal, March 24 2024:
Republican Party of India-Athawale (RPI-A) national secretary Maheshwar Thounaojam has announced his decision to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election 2024 from Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency on the party's ticket, in a public gathering held at his Keishampat residence, here on Sunday afternoon.
Addressing the gathering, Maheshwar said that he will contest the election on RPI-A ticket but his ideology is independent from those of the party.
Different political parties have their own ideologies, and publish poll manifesto based on their ideologies.
However, those ideologies cannot save the indigenous people of Manipur and as such, he would contest the election on his own set of belief irrespective of following the party's ideologies or not.
At the same time, the party has never asked him to stop his campaign in relation with the crisis.
Even if they do so, he will happily leave the party, he said.
The crisis in the state is not resolved, people are suffering, and boycotting the Lok Sabha election is a must.
He has been remaining silent over the election thinking that it might create division among the people.
However, he took the decision to contest the election since the solution should come from political pressure and policies.
He is contesting the election to save the state and its people, and also to ensure the people enjoy their constitutional rights to the fullest, Maheshwar said.
Nevertheless, the election, this time, is not a festival, he said while urging the public to take a firm resolution to prevent any form of corrupt practices like distribution of cash for votes, organising feasts and resorting to unfair means to win election.
People of the state had endured sleepless nights and restless days for nearly one year and it would not be hard to take a stand for few days, he said.
Maheshwar also maintained that he will not involve in any form of political blame-game or mud-slinging, but continue to walk the path of fighting for the state.
He also dismissed rumours of being sponsored by a major political party.
