Imphal, April 11 2025:
Manipur unit of the National People's Party (NPP) on Friday announced its firm opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, stating that the law is contentious and has triggered widespread protests from the Muslim community across India.
Addressing a press conference at his Naoremthong residence, NPP state president Yumnam Joykumar noted that many are questioning the stand of Muslim legislators on the issue.
He clarified that the party's state unit stands with the community and fully opposes the new law.
Joykumar said NPP legislator Sheikh Noorul Hassan, who represents Kshetrigao and belongs to the affected community, has already challenged the Act in the Supreme Court.

The party endorses his petition and will provide full support, he assured, noting that the decision was made after consultations with national party leaders.
Mention may be made that MLA Noorul, a former member of the Manipur State Waqf Board, filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Wednesday challenging the constitutional validity of the 2025 amendment.
He argued that the Act infringes on religious autonomy and property rights of Muslims by centralising control and imposing restrictions on waqf administration.
The petition alleged that the Act abolishes the long-standing practice of recognising Waqf based on community use, replacing it with rigid criteria that could convert historic endowment lands into private or government property.
It also objected new mandates requiring extensive documentation and personal details of Waqf creators, which Hassan claims are unfeasible for properties dating back centuries.
The petition contended that the law violates constitutional protections under Articles 14, 25, and 26, and seeks to have the 2025 Act struck down and the earlier Waqf Act of 1995 reinstated.
