Imphal, April 06 2025:
An irate mob set fire to the house of BJP Minority Morcha president Mk Asker Ali at Lilong Sambrukhong under Lilong police station late Sunday evening, following his speech in support of the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 .
According to reports, the attack was triggered after Asker shared a social media post endorsing the bill, which has sparked outrage among sections of the Muslim community in Manipur, particularly the Meitei Pangal.
Enraged locals converged at his house, vandalised the property, and set it ablaze.
Lilong police and additional security personnel rushed to the spot but reports said that they have not been able to control the mob till late night.
Authorities said that the situation remains tense and uncontrollable till late Sunday night.
No casualties were reported at the time of filing this report.
The WAQF (Amendment) Bill, 2025 - recently passed by both Houses of Parliament - has been facing strong objection from Muslim organisations across the country.
Critics argue that the bill dilutes community control over WAQF properties and centralises authority under the government, undermining traditional custodianship.
In the state too, several Meitei Pangal bodies have been voicing opposition, staging protests and issuing statements demanding the rollback of the legislation.
