Minister scans Loktak area flood prevention works

Public Health Engineering and CAF&PD minister L Susindro said that the state government has taken up steps to address frequent flooding in the periphery of the Loktak Lake.
Pointing out that loose soil and debris brought and deposited in the lake by rivers and streams is one of the factors for the perennial floodlike situation in areas nearby the water body, Susindro, who is also chairman of the Cabinet Sub-Committee constituted for conservation of the Loktak Lake, affirmed that the government will initiate dredging of water channels around the Lake to check flooding.
The said channels would be redeveloped to block sand and debris brought by rivers and streams, and redirect the flow along the Leimatak before it enters the lake, he said.
Elaborating on the government measures on Monday during an inspection of the phumdi clearance exercise being carried out Loktak Development Authority (LDA), the minister also assured that the government's initiative will not only prevent shallowness of Loktak Lake but also help reduce accumulation of waste, including plastics and glass.

phumdi clearance operations are being carried out before rise in level of the lake's water, he maintained, adding that the work is a precursor to dredging of channels around the lake, which will begin once the water level recedes.
He also mentioned that dredging of the channels around Lake would be followed by construction of ring roads to enhance profile of the lake and its surroundings as a tourist destination.
Minister Susindro urged locals settling in the lake's periphery to support and cooperate with the government's initiative.
