Imphal, August 21 2025:
The Imphal-Dimapur highway was blockaded at Sekmai on Thursday as the JAC against the death of Laishram (n) Hijam (o) Ibemcha' launched agitation in denunciation of RIMS authorities' failure to respond to its demands concerning the case.
The JAC had demanded setting up a Fixed Deposit of Rs 50,000 each for Ibemcha's two daughters and funding their educational expenses; legal action against the doctor(s) responsible; and video coverage of the post-mortem examination conducted in the presence of a retired judge.
The JAC had announced on Wednesday of shutting down the Imphal-Dimapur road from 1 pm Thursday if the director of RIMS does not give assurances to translate their demands into action by noon, and not to claim the body as well.
However, the RIMS authority did not give the assurances till the deadline, resulting in the JAC going ahead with its protest.
It may be mentioned that Ibemcha, who had been undergoing treatment for a broken leg at RIMS since August 13, died on August 19 shortly after she was administered medication prescribed in preparation for an upcoming surgical procedure.
The unexpected nature of her demise prompted outrage, leading to a protest within the RIMS complex on the very day of her death.
