Imphal, November 13 2023:
The 60-page letter submitted to the United Nation's General Secretary by World Meitei Council (WMC) has been compiled into a book titled "The Meiteis' Plight" and released during a function held at Manipur Press Club, here, on Monday.
Along with releasing the book, a signature campaign launched against the press statement released by the United Nations was also carried out at the club.
Speaking on the occasion, WMC member Kh Muhen, who is also the designer of the book, recounted that the UN released a press statement on September 4 last where it carried a one sided story, portraying Meiteis as a brutal, evil and ruthless community.
WMC had written a letter to the UN urging it to review the press statement along with filling a petition at Change, org on October 26 .
Informing that the signature campaign had been receiving below par response from the public due to internet ban in the state with only 61,000 signatures collected till date, he said that WMC is targeting at least 1 lakh signatures for the start with the target increased to 2 lakh for final submission to the UN.
While appealing to the public to spread awareness about the petition to friends and relatives staying outside the state and help in signing the petition so as to achieve the desired goal, Kh Muhen said that the petition has been developed with the help and support from Meiteis settling across the globe.
The function was also attended by WMC chairman H Nabashyam, Salai Kanba Lup vice president Leichombam Gopal, Federation of Haomee president Sapamcha Jadumani, STDCM president Yumnam Dheeraj, senior journalist Yambem Laba, Meitei Tribe Union president Salam Gourak-ishore and WMC Manipur Unit president U Kunjo as presidium members.
