Befitting tribute paid to Manipuri brave-hearts on Patriots'Day

Imphal, August 13 2022: Patriots' Day, which is observed every year on August 13 in remembrance of the supreme sacrifice of Manipuri forefathers, who made the supreme sacrifice of laying their lives in trying to protect the sovereignty of Manipur, was ob served on Saturday across the state.

Speaking at an observance function at the office of Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Veterinary minister Khashim Vashum stressed that we should never forget the sacrifices of the patriots who laid down their lives to protect Manipur's freedom from being taken away by the British.

As a part of Patriots' Day celebration and to mark 75 years of India's independence, the Indian flag was hoisted In his address, Khashim Vashum recalled the bravery of Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General and others, who sacrificed their lives for Manipur; while Veterinary director Dr Ng Ibotombi said that the flag was hoisted to mark joint observance of Patriots' Day and 75 years of India's independence.

The observance was also attended by Veterinary joint director (planning) Dr RK Khogendrajit and other officials and staff.

Manipuris in Kolkata (MIK) and Manipur Bhavan, Kolkata jointly observed Patriots' Day at the Bhavan located at Rowland Road.

Social service at the campus and offering of floral tribute to the photos of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General marked the observance.

Patriots' Day observance functions were also organised at the district level. BISHNUPUR: District administration observed Patriots' Day at Conference Hall of DC Office with DC L Bikram leading the gathering in a wreath laying ceremony and paying rich floral tributes to the portraits of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

Speaking on the occasion, Bikram remarked that there is no greater sacrifice than to lay down one's life for the motherland.

Reflecting on the supreme and selfless sacrifices made by Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General during the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, the DC also said abiding by the Fundamental Duties of the nation as responsible citizens will pave a way in ensuring a better society and brighter tomorrow.

He urged all to emulate the unconquerable spirit and patriotism of the great forefathers for the progress and development of the state and country.

As a part of Patriots' Day, District Information Office (DIPR) also carried out "Prabhat Pheri" at various locations of the district.

Patriotic songs were played through loudspeakers to rekindle the sense of patriotism among the people.

ADM Bishnupur H Bobby Sharma, DLOs and several district administration staff also paid their tributes on the occasion.

THOUBAL: District administration observed 131st Patriots' Day at the Counting Hall of DC Complex, Thoubal with deputy commissioner A Subhash Singh, SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam and ADM B Lokeshor Sharma, SDOs, SDCs, DLOs and staff of DC office Thoubal in attendance.

In his speech, DC Subhash reminded the gathering about the supreme and selfless sacrifice made by our forefathers during the freedom struggle.

He also expressed that there is a need for more unity and cooperation amongst the people for better growth and development in the society.

"Like our forefathers who made supreme sacrifice for the nation, we also need to participate and contribute effectively for the development of the state," he added.

Prayers by religious leaders of different faiths were performed as part of the function.

SENAPATI: District administration of Senapati observed 131st Patriots' Day at DRDA Conference Hall, Senapati.

Speaking on the occasion, deputy commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari stressed that everyone must learn to live an ideal life and work hard like Thangal General and Bir Tikendrajit who had sacrificed their life for the liberation of Manipur from the British rule.

He also urged everyone to come forward and sacrifice their time for the betterment of society.

A brief history of the two heroes (Thangal General and Bir Tikendrajit) was also narrated by SDO Senapati/Purul and SDO Tadubi/Lairouching.

Floral tribute and lighting of candle were also led by Senapati DC and SP followed by district level officers in paying homage to the martyr.

The programme was also attended by district SP Karthik Malladi and all the district level officers.

On the occasion of Patriots' Day, floral tributes in honour of General Thangal and Charai Thangal were also paid at Thangal General Ecological Park, Mayangkhang organised by Thangal Union.

The observance was attended by United Naga Council president S Kho John as chief guest, Naga People's Organisation (NPO) president Solomon Arow as guest of honour and Thangal Union president YK Kaping as functional president.

Kho John stated that the two heroes were remembered even after more than 200 years because of their nationalism which had left a legacy to the younger generations.

The UNC president said the two heroes were legendary leaders who with their utmost sincerity tried to save the princely state, Manipur during their time.

Different religious leaders and CSO leaders including the United Naga Council, Naga Women's Union, Senapati District Women's Association, Senapati District Students' Association and social leaders from Thangal community attended the programme.

KANGPOKPI: Patriots' Day was observed in Kangpokpi district in memory of fallen heroes who had sacrificed their lives in the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War.

The function was organised by District Administration Kangpokpi at DC Office Complex.

Floral tributes were paid by the officials led by DC Kengoo Zuringla.

CHANDEL: Patriots' Day was observed in Chandel district headquarters with DC Mayanglambam Rajkumar, SP Pandey Hemant M and 8 MR commandant T Thongzapao as the presidium members.

The function started with laying of wreaths and floral tributes followed by gun salute and a two-minute silence in the memory of departed heroes of Manipur's last war of Independence, 1891 .

Speaking on the occasion M Rajkumar reminded that "we should not forget the extreme sacrifices made by our forefathers, from all communities of the state for a united and independent Manipur against the mighty British empire".

He further said unity which was amongst different communities in the olden days seems to have eroded nowadays.

He said one needs to think about our future generations and remember and reignite the age old culture of unity amongst the different communities, in order to stand out and show our identity in different fields, and it will be the only genuine way of showing our patriotism towards the nation, in today's world.

KAKCHING: District administration observed Patriots' Day at Open Hall, near NIC Conference Hall, Kakching on Saturday.

The function was attended by DC Somorjit Salam, SP Shrey Vats and ADM A Adahrii Maheo as dignitaries DC Somorjit Salam led in paying floral tributes as a mark of respect and reverence to the forefathers who made supreme and selfless sacrifice for the freedom and sovereignty of our motherland against the mighty British.

In his speech, DC Somorjit reminded about the sacrifice made by our forefathers during the freedom struggle.

He also stressed on the need for promoting unity and cooperation amongst the people for better growth and development in the society.

Meanwhile, Manipur Peace and Integrity (MAPI) Council and Nongpok Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup jointly observed Patriots' Day and the death anniversary of former Council president Nongthombam Bimol (Sanaremba) at its Wangkhei office on Saturday.

During the observance, which was attended by Nongpok Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup president Y Mema and Council advisor Ch Joykumar Sharma as presidium members, floral tributes were offered to the portraits of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General, followed by the speakers remembering the life history and contributions of Bimol.

Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS j, Imphal also observed Patriots' Day with director Prof A Santa Singh leading the gathering comprising medical superintendent Prof N Sanjib Singh, dean (academic) Prof Brogen Singh Akoijam, head (Obst & Gynaecology) Prof M Rameswar Singh, officials, staff and students in offering floral tributes to the martyred Manipuri forefathers.

As a part of the tribute event, head of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Department Dr Ak Ibohal Singh spoke on the theme Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 while Y Biken recited a patriotic poem and students of the institute presented patriotic songs and performed a skit.

The Director also distributed appreciation certificates to select doctors in recognition of their best performance in the last 4 months.

Principals of Dental College and College of Nursing, heads of Departments, faculty members, high ranking officials of the institute, staff, students and invitees attended the observance function.
