Ukhrul, June 06 2024:
A tree plantation drive marked the observance of World Environment Day at the UDCRMS Resource Centre in Hungpung, here on Wednesday.
The event was a collaborative effort between UDCRMS, Divisional Forest Office, Ukhrul, and Arch Diocese of Imphal, PARDA.
Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Ukhrul DC Zuringla Kengoo emphasised the significance of the event, which saw participation of both elders and students.
She highlighted the long-standing use of timber for construction but lamented the unsustainable consumption of natural resources.
While cautioning about devastating consequences of human activities on nature, such as floods and landslides, she reminded that while nature has provided humans with an abundance of resources, humans have not reciprocated by giving back.
"We all have a crucial role to play in safeguarding our environment.
It is not nature or trees that depend on us, but we depend on them," she said.
Kengoo then implored those present to refrain from littering and to dispose of waste responsibly.
She also drew attention to the issue of plastic waste clogging drains in Ukhrul town.
In his speech as guest of honour, Ukhrul DFO Rajesh Darade emphasised the constitutional mandate that designates the protection of nature as a fundamental responsibility for each citizen.
He further highlighted the importance of planting for upcoming generations,' ensuring that future generations inherit a healthy and thriving environment.
Addressing the welcome speech, UDCRMS DPO Lilly Rose Jajo expressed her love for nature and the significance of tree planting.
"We are observing this occasion and planting trees, we love nature and the environment," she stated.
Jajo emphasised the necessity for collaboration in driving positive change.
"Working together is the right approach to make a difference," she remarked.
She concluded by calling upon all citizens to act responsibly and contribute to environmental protection.
"Let us all be responsible stewards of our planet," she urged.
As part of the observance, all the participants planted different species of tree saplings including cherry, gul mohar, and other ornamental trees at the UDCRMS campus.
DFO Darade contributed saplings and tree guards, while PARDA contributed Kachai lemon saplings to the participants.
