Imphal, May 25 2024:
The first interaction programme for Sth Media Fellows (2024-25) on Climate Change Reporting was organised by Directorate of Environment & Climate Change Manipur at the State Botanical Garden, Khongampat (Laikon) on Saturday.
Speaking at the occasion, State Wetlands Authority, Manipur Technical Committee chairman Dr Kh Shamungou stated that emergence of some species in Manipur over the past few decades such as Kokil or Indian Koel (Asian Koel), whose original living environment is completely different from that of the state, can be regarded as one of the many indicators of climate change.
He also said that the disappearance of species due to man-made factors results in loss of biodiversity and indirectly affects climate change.
CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology, Lamphelpat chief scientist Dr H Birkumar Singh spoke on the effects of monoculture, which discourages biodiversity.
With regard to tree plantation drives being conducted in the state, he suggested conducting a pre-survey beforehand to ascertain the species which could enrich the biodiversity of the area for a long time, while also ensuring the safe growth of the saplings into maturity, and further increasing the green coverage.
He then appreciated the media with regard to spreading awareness amongst the masses on rejuvenation, while suggesting following up on success stories to further motivate the people.
Addressing the gathering, Environment and Climate Change director Dr T Brajakumar Singh urged the fellows to carry out data analysis before filing a report.
He also advised against indiscriminate use of terminologies with regard to climate reporting as well as for cross-checking reports and confirming the same with help of experts before publication.
The interaction programme was attended by experts, former and current media fellows, senior reporters and others.
