Many observe International Mother Language Day

Imphal, February 21 2025: Directorate of Language Planning & Implementation, Manipur observed the International Mother Language Day on the theme "Languages Matter: Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day", at the conference hall of the Department of Adult Education, Babupara on Friday.

The observance was attended by Language Planning & Implementation director L Radhakanta, Adult Education additional director Anjali Chongtham and Adult Education Department joint secretary Laishram Boboi as dignitaries.

Patriotic Writers Forum (PAWF), Manipur also observed International Mother Language Day by organising a literary award presentation ceremony at IMA Banquet Hall, Keishampat here on Friday with EK Higher Secondary School secretary P Saratchandra Singh as chief guest, PAWF president Naoroibam Khamba Luwang as president and Horticulture retired mission director Khuraijam Ratankumar Singh as guest of honour.' Forum secretary Rakesh Naorem also attended the event during which Forum's biannual journal, "Ngaklou Chephong" with OC Meira as editor, and Damodar Laishram's poetry anthology, "Replaying Feelings" were released.

The Arambam Ibungohal and Binodkumar Literary Award-2025 (awarded to poets under 35 years of age) was presented to Rk Nayansana Devi of Palace Compound for her book, "Punsi Lambira Norok kilambira"; Pacha Meetei Literary Award, 2025 to Keisham Bijoykumar of Keis -hamthong Hodam Leirak for "Khongul Lirukhige"; and Dr Saroj Nalini Arambam Prat Literary Award, 2025 to Thokchom Thouyangba of Kongba Laishram Leikai for "Khwaidagi Haoba Khoni".

The Day was also jointly observed by Wakhallon Manaba Apunba (WAMA), Kangleipak and Citizens Club at Khurai Soibam Leikai on Friday.

Presided over by WAMA president Naokhomba Meetei, the observance was attended by BSEM chairman Akham Joykumar as chief guest; All Manipur Recognised Private School Welfare Association president L Joy Khuman, Citizens' Club president Naorem Mahendra and CoHSEM former chairman Hamom Naba as guests of honour.

As part of the observance, Arun Paint House, Nagamapal Lamabam Leirak dedicated an award carrying cash prize, citation and honorary shawl, to Chingsubam Wangambi Leima, the wife of late Chingsubam Akaba, who worked tirelessly to preserve and promote Meetei Mayek.

Meanwhile, International Mother Language Day was observed in Kakching and Wangjing on Friday.

Sahitya Seva Samiti Kakching, Manipur observed International Mother Language Day at the auditorium of Library and Information Centre, Kakching Phoushupat Leikai.

The observance was attended by Bhubon and Leiren Brick Field proprietor Naorem Nopur Singh as chief guest and Kha Manipur College Chemistry Department head associate professor Naorem Chaoba Singh as president while Sahitya Seva Samit'i, Kakching vice president Mayanglambam Kunjakesho and ex-president Yengkhom Kengba were the guests of honour.

As part of the observance, tributes were paid to departed activists of mother tongue (languages).

Later, around 30 poets recited poetries on the occasion.

On the other hand, Khori-rol Sandoklup Wangjing, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Thoubal district and Ningol Khut, Wangjing jointly observed International Mother Language Day at Khorirol Shanglen Wangjing on Friday.

The observance was attended by Khorirol San doklup Wangjing president Tongbram Babulal, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad.

Thoubal president Moirangthem Rajendra and Ningol Khut president Khundongbam Gunamani as presidium members.

The observance was held in two sessions - in the first session, Macha Chanu Kakching president and author Dr Nongmaithem Pramod ini spoke on 'international mother languages', while in the second, author Saikhom Chaoba moderated a poetry recital participated by around 30 authors.

Meanwhile, Department of Linguistics, Naorem Birahari College, Khundrakpam in collaboration Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture, Manipur Chapter and Women's Studies Centre, Women Cell, Ng Mani College, Khurai Chairenthong observed International Mother Language Day at VKIC Office on the theme "Imalongi Maruoiba" (Importance of Mother Tongue).

According to a press release, Vivekananda Kendra, Manipur Chapter Jiban Bharathi Karyakarta Ashok Athale; Department of Linguistics, Naorem Birahari College head Dr N Pritamkumar Singh; and Jadonang College, Noney English Department assistant professor Dr W Saritarani Devi attended as presidium members, along with students and teachers.

Linguistics Department Dr N Brindebala Devi delivered the keynote address, while Vivekananda Kendra members Chandrababu, Priyobar and Linguistics Department Dr T Sandhyalata shared their views on the importance of mother languages.

Presided over by Dr E Manimohon Meitei, the observance concluded with a vote of thanks by Linguistics Department Dr L Sarankumari, the release informed.
