Imphal, August 16 2025:
The All Manipur Road Transporters Drivers and Motor Workers Union has expressed concern that the much-needed repairing to the deteriorated National Highway-2 stretch from Kohima to Phesama remain incomplete, while work on the Maram-Peren by-pass road has also been halted despite earlier assurances.
Speaking to reporters after a joint inspection along with Surface Transport Hill Areas Drivers Welfare secretary Heikha, Senapati District Drivers Welfare Union president B Loli Piku, and other union executives, union secretary Maimom Anil Meetei said that the poor condition of the Imphal-Dimapur highway has caused significant hardships for transporters and the public.

He noted that large sections of the road are riddled with potholes and remain in disrepair.
Anil said that the state government had initiated work on the Maram-Peren road as an alternative route, but the project has now been delayed.
The 293-km Imphal-Maram-Peren-Jalukie-Jharna Pani-Dimapur stretch of National Highway-129E, considered a vital secondary lifeline for Manipur, is yet to be completed.
He recalled that on July 2, the principal secretary (Works) had assured that repairs on NH-2, including the Kohima-Jessami-Ukhrul-Imphal route and other connecting roads, would be carried out to ease travel difficulties.
However, the current pace of work indicates further delays, and drivers fear the roads may not be ready before the next monsoon season.
The union secretary stressed that NH-2 is a critical route for the state, and urged the government to speed up repair and maintenance work not only on NH-2 but also on the Maram-Peren by-pass to ensure uninterrupted transport services.
