Imphal, September 30 2024:
Mongbung Meetei village in Jiribam district suffered extensive damage on Sunday night as Kuki militants launched a fierce attack from the neighbouring Mongbung and Sejang Kuki villages.
The assault, which began around 8:40 pm, involved a barrage of bombs that struck several houses in the village.
While some of the bombs exploded, many failed to detonate or missed residential areas, preventing casualties.
During the attack, several houses were hit by bombs, causing widespread destruction.
In a particularly alarming incident, a bomb landed through the roof into the kitchen of one Longjam Koibi's home, where children and family members were present.
Although the roof was damaged, the bomb did not explode, averting a potential tragedy as villagers caught in the middle of the assault fled to safer locations.
In response to the attack, joint operations were conducted on Monday by Jiribam district police, CRPF, Assam Rifles, and other forces at Mongbung Meetei village, Mongbung & Sejan Kuki villages, and in surrounding areas.
The operations led by Jiribam SP, accompanied by senior officials of CRPF and Assam Rifles, concluded around 1:30 pm on Monday.
The joint team recovered arms and ammunition suspected to have been used or abandoned by the attackers.
The recoveries include two sub-machine gun (carbine) with registration numbers 15321356 & 15185066 along with two magazines and sling, two 7.62mm cases, one 5.56mm case, 196 cases of 12-bore, and an improvised bomb (Pumpi) .
While the attack caused significant damage to the village, there were no reported casualties.
According to a police report, the firing between unidentified persons from Mongbung Meetei and Mongbung Kuki villages on Sunday night was intense, but no injuries were reported.
Amid high tension in the area, Mongbung Meetei villagers raised objection to deployment of central forces, insisting that only state security personnel be stationed within the village.
As a result, district police arranged deployment of state forces in the village, with central forces guarding the outskirts.
Sunday's attack was the 16th on Mongbung Meetei village by the Kuki militants.
