Meeteis in Assam demand ST status

Demanding ST status to Meeteis settling in different parts of Assam, World Meetei Council (WMC), Assam unit along with Manipuri Basti Meira Paibi, Manipuri Rajbari Students' Union (MRSU), United Manipuri Association Assam (UMAA) and Achanba Lup (AL) organised a sit-in demonstration at Manipuri Rajbari, Guwahati on Sunday.
During the protest, Meeteis settled in Assam urged Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh not to delay in sending the latest socio-economic and ethnographic reports of the Meetei community to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, as proposed by the latter.
According to a statement of WMC Assam unit, the Meetei community living in Assam has been demanding Scheduled Tribe status to protect the identity of the community much earlier than the Meetei s of Manipur raised the same demand.
However, the demand of the Meetei of Assam is being kept in abeyance as chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he will take necessary action the very next day Meeteis of Manipur get ST status.
It also urged chief minister N Biren Singh to send the two reports on Meetei as desired by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs so that the process for inclusion of Meetei in the ST list may be completed before the process of Delimitation of 2026 .
