Imphal, January 23 2026: Khongnangthaba University organised a worship ceremony of Maheigi Lairenbi (Goddess of Learning) at the campus of Kangleipak Medical and Nursing Institute in Imphal today.

As per a release issued by Khongnangthaba University, the event was aimed at reviving the traditional Meitei practice of worshipping the Goddess of Learning.

The programme was graced by Prof Naorem Joykumar, Vice-Chancellor, Khongnangthaba University; Dr Khaidem Jayanta Meitei and Prof K Bheigyachandra, Dean, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, as presidium members.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Naorem Joykumar said that students should keep the Goddess of Learning in their hearts so that they can concentrate more deeply on their studies.

He emphasised discipline and respect for elders and noted that learning with such reverence will strengthen moral values.

Highlighting the significance of the Goddess in Meitei society, Prof K Bheigyachandra said that traditionally, the Goddess was worshipped on the fifth day of the lunar month of "Phairen" .

"Over time, due to changing circumstances and religious practices, the tradition gradually declined and remained largely only in name", said Prof Bheigyachandra while emphasizing the efforts being made at Khongnangthaba University to revive the tradition.

He also advised students to worship the Goddess of Learning, also known as "Humbu Naoreng Sungbi, Ima Singja Khongbi", to uphold the heritage handed down by the forefathers.
