UCM holds meet with Bangladesh Meeteis

United Committee Manipur (UCM) in association with United Manipuri Organisation (UMO), a Manipuri socio-cultural organisation based in Bangladesh, organised a public meeting with Meetei residents of Chota Dhamai, Maulvi Bazar district of Bangladesh on Saturday night with UMO advisory board chairman advocate SC Sinha presiding over.
Speaking on the occasion, UCM president Joychandra Konthoujam observed that Meetei is a highly independent community with its own unique culture and tradition as well as civilisational history of thousands of years.
He called upon members of the community residing in different parts of the world in taking a stand to uphold the rich heritage, culture and tradition while remembering the roots.
He further urged the Meetei organisations in Bangladesh to mount pressure on the local government to approve Meetei Mayek in their school education along with stressing the need for unity and strength in highlighting truth of the current conflict in Manipur to the world so that the international community acknowledges that Meetei is not at fault in the crisis.
A cultural exchange programme was also organised as part of the event wherein artistes of Tapasya, a performing art centre located in Singjamei Wangma Pebia Pandit Leikai, presented folk dances, Thang-Ta and other cultural programmes.
On Sunday, the UCM team led by its Joychandra visited several Meetei families of the locality and interacted with them.
The UCM team came across Meetei families upholding indigenous culture and tradition.
The residents also appreciated the UCM team for their visit and interacting with them.
Later in the afternoon, a handloom and handicraft exhibition was organised in the locality.
