State eyes 60,000 MT fish yield

Department of Fisheries celebrated the 25th National Fish Farmers Day at its Lamphelpat office, here, on Thursday.
Presiding over the function, Fisheries director T Phulen Meitei stated that the purpose of the day was not only to celebrate fish farmers but also to celebrate the various developments in the sector of fish farming including the first introduction of induced fish breeding.
He also extolled the recent introduction of blue revolution and additional different technologies, making it possible to meet the demands of the consumers.

"It is a day to honour all the dedicated farmers who have been contributing at their optimum level," he said and appealed to all farmers to avail to different insurance schemes introduced by the government.
The director opined that the state's cultural belief and identity is associated with fish consuming culture and could be found in all ages, right from birth to death.
"There is always a room for improvement for the department in the coming months," he said, while lauding the staff for their dedication and efforts towards the welfare of the fishermen.
At the same time, Phulen encouraged all the awarded farmers to produce more fish in coming years to meet the required demand of 20,000 MT in the state.
The department has not only fulfilled project 'Sareng' but is also making serious efforts to revive 'Ngakijou' with some of the experts, he informed Stating that the state has the potential to produced 60,000MT of fish, he said that discussion is being held to fully realise this potential with the Department trying its best to end the shortage of fish in the state.
During the celebration, various outstanding fish farmers of the state were felicitated.
The Highest Producer of Fish (Individual Category) & Highest Indigenous Fish Producer was bagged by Salam Lokendro Singh of Laphupat Tera, Imphal West, who produced 43,765 Kg of fish at Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition last year, with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh along with a citation.
He was followed by Ningthoujam Basanta Singh of Khordak, Bishnupur district and Laimujam Dinamani of Tentha, Thoubal district who bagged second and third position respectively along with a cash prize of Rs 70,000 and Rs 50,000 each.
Consolation prizes were awarded to 20 fish farmers with a cash reward of Rs 10,000 each along with a citation.
Later, a book was also released on the occasion.
Presentation of songs by renowned singer Hamom Sadananda was the other highlight of the function also attended by special secretary (Fisheries) Neeta Arambam, Manipur Public Service Commission (MPSC) controller of examinations Kh Lalmani, additional director of Fisheries L Jayarani Devi, joint director T Romi Singh and project officer Hemchandra Ningthoujam along with other dignitaries and officials.
