Flood threat prompts closure of schools, public holiday

Imphal, July 02 2024:
In view of the rising water level of major rivers, inundation of many low-lying areas due to incessant rain and in anticipation of flood-like situation, the state government has announced closure of all schools (government, aided, private and central schools) in the state on July 3 and 4 while some government offices and institutions will remain shut on July 3 .
In an order issued by Education (S) director L Nandakumar Singh, all Zonal Education Officers/DI of Schools (independent charges) under the Department of Education (Schools) have been directed to inform all concerned and take up necessary actions accordingly.
Meanwhile, the state government has declared Wednesday a public holiday keeping in view of the flood situation faced by the state following incessant rains over the past few days which has resulted in several rivers to overflow and flooding in various districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Kangpokpi, Senapati, Thoubal, and Bishnupur.
Informing this in an order, the general administration department said that the government is actively engaged in rescue and relief operations through the respective district administrations and departments concerned.
The government also issued a public advisory urging the public to remain indoors except in cases of emergency to facilitate smooth execution of rescue and relief operations, as well as evacuation of stranded individuals.
The public holiday will cover all government offices, including Public Sector Undertakings, corporations, autonomous bodies, and societies under the state government' .
Additionally, all banks, financial institutions, and the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) located in the state will also remain closed on this date, it mentioned, adding that departments involved in rescue and relief operations and essential services, such as home, police, district administration, relief and disaster management, power, health and family welfare, public health engineering, water resources, public works department, general administration department, consumer affairs, food and public distribution, minor irrigation, forests, and Loktak Development Authority, will continue to function as usual.
Additionally, officers and employees from all other departments are required to remain available on phone for any emergency.
