Gaikhangam says Manipur needs peace

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam on Wednesday expressed worry that the State Government is now facing slew of issues and added that a concerted effort is needed to bring about peace in Manipur.
The Deputy Chief Minister was speaking on the occasion of 42nd foundation day celebration of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) at Manipur Press Club, Imphal.
Participating as chief guest during the function, Gaikhangam asserted that the role of media include efforts aimed at bringing stability and harmony in the society.
He implored all parties infuriated by the three Bills passed in the State Assembly on August 31 to come to the negotiating table and thrash out differences in order that a permanent solution can be brought.
"The Government wants to engage in talks with the discontented groups.
No problem can be solved unless there is discussion," the Deputy Chief Minister said.
Expressing concern over the unrest in the hill districts, he reiterated that amendments to the three Bills could still be made and earnestly appealed to the disgruntled groups to hold talks with the Government at any place at the earliest possible time.
MLA N Biren attended the event as the guest of honour.
He said the responsibility of media is big in a State like Manipur which witnesses frequent problems and agitations over various issues.
He stressed the importance of publishing unbiased news in view of the state of affairs in Manipur.
Biren also appealed all groups to come forward to work together and end the current impasse over the three Bills intended to protect the indigenous people.
AMWJU President Wangkhemcha Shamjai in his speech talked about the efforts made by the union to set up a press academy for the State.
Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam was the Guest of honour on the occasion.
Sky Hospital managing director L Shyamkeshore was also present during the function.
Veteran journalists including former presidents and several office bearers of AMWJU were honoured at the event.
