RIMS doctors advised to curb referral tendency

Imphal, September 14 2023: Governor Anusuiya Uikey has commended Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for rendering dedicated service to not only people of Manipur but also the northeast denizens.

She, however, called upon the medical professors to strive for setting the benchmark in the healthcare sector and reminded all concerned that tendency of some doctors to refer even manageable cases to private hospitals will only dent reputation of RIMS.

Speaking as chief guest of the 52nd foundation day celebration of the Institute on Thursday, here, the Governor recalled that RIMS started as a medical institution catering to the needs of the north eastern states.

The basic objective of RIMS is to provide quality medical education and improve the health conditions of the people in rural areas of North Eastern states, where adequate health facilities are not available.

The institute has accelerated its development with the opening of super speciality courses besides opening undergraduate and post graduate courses and also making efforts towards increasing academic and research activities, the Governor said, while noting that a new nursing college has also been established at RIMS.

Appealing to the doctors, nurses and paramedical staffers to establish a good rapport with patients, the Governor said that patients come to hospital with trust and they feel themselves to be in safe hands.

Therefore, doctors should not only be competent but also dedicated and should provide better service to the patients, the Governor said, adding that trust in doctors helps a lot in the recovery of the patients.

She further said that RIMS, being the number one referral hospital, must ensure that no patient is referred to other hospitals but provide the best care in it.

Recalling her early career as a student leader, the Governor asked the students to work for the welfare of humanity and betterment of society.

She also thanked the director, faculties, doctors, nurses, paramedical staffers and students for their relentless efforts to develop RIMS and encouraged them to put their best efforts further to make RIMS, Imphal, the most excellent centre for medical education, research, health and medicine in the country.

The Governor wished that RIMS may be upgraded to the status of AIIMS in the near future while also appealing to the people to remove hatred amongst them and work for the development of the state.

The service provided by RIMS is highly satisfactory and the institute is becoming one of the advanced hospitals in the northeast region.

Besides, initiatives are being taken up to bring more growth in terms of academic and research activities apart from providing healthcare services, the Governor said.

She also encouraged all the medical students to strive for becoming specialist doctors and to provide service with a sense of dedication and sacrifice.

She praised the role played by doctors during the Covid-19 pandemic and how they saved numerous lives.

The Governor also expressed satisfaction on seeing retired doctors attending the event and said that their presence has shown the world that there is no retirement in the life of a doctor.

Expressing concern over the ethnic violence that has engulfed the state for over four months now, the Governor called for a collective effort to end the violence and restore peace through reconciliation stating that resolving the crisis will be beneficial for all.

Former head of RIMS surgery department professor T Babu, former head of pathology department professor DC Sharma, medical superintendent professor N Sanjib; 52nd Foundation Day Celebration of RIMS reception sub-committee chairman professor Ch Arunkumar and Dean (admn) Dr Brogen Akoijam also attended the function.

The Governor also released a journal of Medical Society while RIMS director professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma presented the annual report of RIMS.

The outgoing chairman of Medical Society RIMS also introduced new office bearers of the society at the occasion.

As part of the programme, the Governor distributed awards to the outstanding medical students and wished them a grand success in their future.
