'Govt needs to formulate language policy'

Imphal, April 05 2025:
INTACH Manipur Chapter and Rongmei Literature Society, Manipur jointly observed International Mother's Language Observance-2025 on the theme of 'Intangible Culture Heritage: Folklore and oral tradition of the indigenous Rongmei community of Manipur" at JNMDA here on Saturday.
Speaking as the guest of honour, Sahitya Akademi awardee Saratchand Thiyam said that being rich does not simply mean money but being rich in various languages.
He called for concerted efforts to promote and propagate native languages, while stressing the need for the state government to formulate a language policy to protect the diverse languages, culture, art, tradition and customs of the state.
The observance was also attended by Manipur State Kala Akademi awardee and Rongmei Literature Society, Manipur president Ragong-ning Gangmei as president and MU former head of History Department Prof M Joykumar as special guest.
Former CM N Biren was supposed to attend the observance as chief guest but could not do so due to unavoidable circumstances.
However, he sent an audio voice expressing his regret for not being able to attend and called upon all to work together to protect the indigenous cultures of the state.
Later, during the technical sessions, various resource persons spoke on varied topics related to the observance.
