Imphal, March 12 2026:
A three-day "Entrepreneurship Development Programme on Value addition and processing of Citrus", organised by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, concluded today, focusing on leveraging the potential of indigenous GI citrus crops.
The programme, which commenced on March 10, utilized local produce, specifically Kachai Lemon from Ukhrul and Tamenglong oranges, as raw materials to develop a range of value-added products.
These products include spicy lemon, pickle, squash, candy, and Kachai Lemon tea.
The valedictory function was attended by dignitaries, including Partha Mandal, General Manager of NABARD; Dr Soibam Basanta Singh, Head of the ICAR Manipur Centre; and Dr Kh Rishikanta Singh, Senior Scientist & In-charge ABI.
Speaking at the event, Partha Mandal reiterated NABARD's commitment to supporting entrepreneurs.
He encouraged agristartups to utilize the new AgriSURE Fund, a financial product launched by the Government of India and NABARD to support innovative, technology-driven agricultural ventures.
Mandal also emphasized the use of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform to expand market reach.
Dr Soibam Basanta highlighted the common challenge of startup failures due to a lack of patience, urging entrepreneurs to be patient and adopt scientific technologies.
Dr Kh Rishikanta Singh noted that converting citrus into value-added products at the producer level could significantly reduce postharvest losses in the state, thereby providing household employment and enhancing farm income.
