Virtual classes for students at relief camps begin

Imphal, December 09 2023: Amidst the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, an initiative by Delhi Meetei Coordinating Committee (DMCC) and Global Manipur Federation (GMF) has started virtual classes at several relief camps in Kakching and Imphal.

The virtual classes kicked off on November 18 at Kakching relief camp and now has reached two more relief camps at Heingang and Akampat.

The Delhi Meetei Coordinating Committee (DMCC) said the virtual class was launched with the hope of fostering deeper student understanding and inclusivity.

"They have been presenting cross-cultural insights across three consecutive classes.

The unwavering enthusiasm of our students despite adversities is truly inspiring," DMCC said in a statement.

DMCC said the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology, Imphal has helped in providing the space for the virtual class.

A team of diaspora from Taiwan-Basanta Haobijam and Harishore Tourangbam, Japan-Raj Bobo Khumukcham and Oinam Lalhaba and Delhi-Oliver Oinam are currently interacting and teaching the online classes with coordination from the relief camps at Manipur.

The online interaction program is introducing the culture, tradition, education system, and technology outside India to the students at the relief camps.

The interaction aims at igniting the young minds and also shows the diaspora's solidarity in this current situation, DMCC said.

With the lifting of the internet ban, the team is expecting to include more relief camps.

The virtual classes are designed to impart practical life skills to children in relief camps that go beyond the conventional school curriculum.

The team aims to equip the children with valuable skills that are often not covered in the school settings, and provide a holistic and enriching educational experience.

"Education stands as a stabilizing force, offering hope and guidance for individuals to rebuild their lives.

However, the current situation in Manipur is deeply concerning as students encounter substantial obstacles including displacement, insufficient infrastructure, emotional trauma affecting learning, safety concerns, and limited resources, severely impacting their education.

Various measures by the Government and NGOs are being taken to uplift and enrich the lives of these students, but a lot remains to be done.

"We need to sharpen their vision as they are the future of our society.

In this time of hardship, many young bloods tend to go in the wrong direction of violence and hatred, which will have a massive negative impact on their minds life long.

As their elders, we see the need to show them the vision of tomorrow and broaden their horizons out of the well.

Seeing such requirements, the Meeteis across the globe unitedly come forward to nurture the violence-affected young minds" said DMCC.
