The Federation of Haomee (FoH) has expressed serious concerns about potential health risks posed by unhygienic and expired bakery products reportedly sold by non-Manipuri operators.
In a release, FoH highlighted incidents of deliberate malpractice including falsification of expiration dates on food labels which is a form of food fraud and urged authorities concerned to take up immediate and stringent measures to ensure the quality & safety of these products.
"Recently on August 12, Ema Bakery located at Singjamei Sorokhaibam Leikai and operated by a non-Manipuri individual was found selling expired food items with rewritten expiry dates", it claimed.
Stating that such malpractices pose a significant health risk to consumers, FoH appealed to the authorities concerned to intensify inspections and enforce stricter regulations to prevent sale of expired and harmful food products to the public.
The FoH also expressed concern over the increasing cases of cancer, diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, heart and lung diseases in the State and urged the Food Testing Department to investigate the matter for possible links with certain food items.
Further, the FoH appealed to shop owners to prioritize selling food products manufactured by indigenous people to promote local producers and safeguard public health.
