Imphal, June 21, 2010:
Separate Chief Judicial Magistrate Courts for Imphal West and Imphal East would be established soon.
Law and Legislative Affairs Department has already issued an order towards this end on June 11. According to the order issued in consultation with Gauhati High Court, both the CJM Courts would start functioning from July 1. As per Section 12 of CrPC, there should be one Chief Judicial Magistrate for every district.
Even though CJM Courts have been established and set up for other districts of Manipur, Imphal West and Imphal East districts are clubbed together under Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal and Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal.
As the offices of Chief Judicial Magistrates for Imphal East and Imphal West would be established separately, the existing offices of Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal and Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal would be abolished.
The Government order issued on June 11 mentioned CJM Imphal East office would be opened at Court Building Lamphelpat temporarily while the CJM Imphal West office would be located inside Cheirap Court complex, Uripok.
Incidentally, the All Manipur Bar Association was urging the Government to establish separate CJM offices for Imphal East and Imphal West from 2005 to 2007.
