Imphal, July 15 2022:
While informing that the state has low vaccination rate, chief minister N Biren has appealed to aH eligible people to take COVID-19 vaccine as well as encourage others to get the vaccination done at government vaccination centres free of cost.
The chief minister made this appeal while launching the 'COVID Vaccine Amrit Mahotsava' Jan Abhiyan Free COVID Precaution Dose for 18 to 59 years group at the CM's secretariat here on Friday.
The launch function was organised jointly by National Health Mission and Directorate of Health and Family Welfare.
The Vaccine Mahotsava will continue till September 30 at government vaccination centres.
Addressing media persons in this regard, CM Biren said that the state is witnessing gradual increase in the number of COVID-19 positive cases over the past few days.
However, it is unfortunate that there are many people who are still reluctant to take vaccine even when it is provided free, he said, highlighting that only 62 percent (14,52,293) of the state's eligible people have taken first dose and only 51 percent (11,98,953) have taken the second dose though the state government is targeting to jab around 23,41,000 people.
He also said that COVID-19 had taken more than 2000 precious lives despite all efforts of the government and another wave would hugely affect the state.
He further urged all those who are yet to take any dose of COVID-19 vaccine due to superstition to take the vaccine so as to protect themselves and their family members from the viral infection.
Regarding opening of schools, the chief minister observed that since children below 12 years of age are yet to be vaccinated, the government decided to close schools for some time and it could be extended if the need arises.
Stating that government welcomes all ideas and suggestions from the public, N Biren conceded that the government was able to fight the pandemic earlier with support and cooperation of the people and would still need support and cooperation of all to battle the contagion.
The launch programme was also attended by health and family welfare minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh and CAF & PD minister L Susindro Meitei, among others.
