International Rivers Day observed

Kangoi Khullen and Kangoi Khunnou Village Authorities, Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur (CRA) and Citizens Concern for Dams and Development celebrated International Rivers Day on the theme "Let the rivers flow free in Manipur", at Kangoi Irangpham, Tengnoupal today, informed a press release of CRA Manipur.
CRA president Sanaton Laishram said that the International Rivers Day is celebrated to protect the health of rivers and to prevent all forms of unsustainable development.
Citizens Concern for Dams and Development Co-chairperson Aram Pamei stressed on importance of rivers, land, forest, etc that sustains the lives and cultures of indigenous communities.
She also expressed concerns over destructive development practices.
Environmental activist Themson Jajo shared his experiences of adverse impacts of Mapithel Dam which is causing widespread displacement in the area.
R Ruikham of All Tribal Women Organization also spoke on the subject while CRA Secy Jiten Yumnam expressed his concerns over the same.
The participants of the event resolved to urge the Govt to ensure free flow of all rivers in Manipur and to stop plans for construction of hydro-power projects.
The celebration also resolved to protect forest, land and other resources in Manipur, it added.
