Moreh, March 14 2020:
One woman aged about 40 years was found dead in a suspicious manner in an unoccupied house at Moreh, Sinai Veng, ward 7 on March 9.There was a ligature mark on the neck of the deceased.
Later, staff of Forensic Department from Imphal arrived at the site and conducted an investigation.
The investigation team was accompanied by Moreh Police Addl SP (LO) Sangboi Gangte, Tengnoupal Addl SP (Ops) Th Krishnatombi and SDPO L Meghabarna.
Meanwhile, a press release issued by Women Action for Development (WAD) secretary Sobita Mangsatabam expressed shock over the suspicious death of the woman.
Sobita also alleged that the deceased might have been gang-raped and murdered as the body was found inside an unoccupied house suspiciously.
Mantaining that killing civilians during Yaoshang festival is quite a trend now, she further claimed that a minor girl from Chandrakhong, Thoubal district was also killed in 2019.The situation is not getting better and systematically targeting of women at Moreh in particular is fear to have been organised by a group of people, Sobita said.
Moreh is under Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.Highlighting past incidents of violence against women where the Assam Rifles was allegedly involved, the secretary also recalled the recent incident where a woman IPS officer was allegedly molested, abused, harassed and intimidated by a rifleman of 12 AR posted at Khudengthabi.
Sobita urged the State Government and authority concerned to arrest the perpetrator (s) involved in the Moreh incident at the earliest.
Further demanding the replacement of all the AR check-post with CISF immediately, she also suggested establishing a Special Investigating Team (SIT) for independent and impartial investigations against the 11 and 12 Assam Rifles for 'committing sexual offences'.
Sobita also appealed all concerned to arrest Panday of 12 AR immediately.
