Kangpokpi, July 05 2018:
A man who was wrongly labelled as 'cannibal' has been reunited with his beloved family Thursday by Kangpokpi Police after identifying his identity.
The reunion of the man with his family has not only solved the anxiety of the family but more importantly calmed the people of Kangpokpi who were disturbed by rumours of present of child lifters/cannibals doing round in social media, said the Police.
Soyam Indrajit Singh (26) son of Soyam Rajen Singh and Soyam Henbi Devi of Sairemkhul Kangdabi Leikai in Imphal West was detained by villagers of Ichaigojang in Saikul sub-division on suspicion of being a child lifter.
He was handed over to his family Thursday afternoon at his home in Sairemkhul Kangdabi Leikai in Imphal West District.
WhatsApp borne fake news/rumors of child lifters had panicked and alerted everyone in the area which compelled the villagers to suspect the mentally unsound Soyam Indrajit Singh, who was found in an odd hour at the village.
The same night Indrajit was detained, another person was also detained by villagers of Champhai in Saikul subdivision under Sagolmang Police Station on the same ground.
Both were handed over to Kuki Inpi Saikul Gamkai the next morning and were later brought to RIMS Hospital by Saikul Police for medical treatment.
Kangpokpi Police had been trying hard to ascertain the identities of the duo and ultimately succeeded in identifying Soyam Indrajit Singh.
The other person who was detained by Champhai villagers has been handed over to Sagolmang Police Station for identification and further inquiry.
SP Kangpokpi has urged the people in the district not to fall prey to rumours.
"It is our responsibility to protect and look after their welfare and whatever mental state they might be in they are still members of our society and they must be given humane treatment as such," said the SP appealing the people in the district to avoid brutal attack on persons based on unfounded rumours.
Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi District has appealed the general public to establish proper identification and avoid violence against persons detained.
It has also urged the people to inform Kuki Inpi or KSO Sadar Hills immediately if any detention of such suspected persons.
