Forest and Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar today launched an agar tree plantation near the Indo-Myanmar border at Holenphai village, Moreh, Tengnoupal district.
It may be noted that Chief Minister N Biren Singh had launched the first agar tree plantation programme at the Heingang Reserve Forest area on June 24.Addressing media persons, Forest Minister said the second agar tree plantation programme at Holenphai village is targeting plantation of more than 16,000 agar trees.
The type of tree is suitable to the particular area, he said.
Fruit bearing trees will be planted at the areas which are not favourable for agar tree plantation, he said.
Forest Minister further said the plantation drive was undertaken after an MoU was signed with the Government of India and Government of Loas during the Sangai Festival last year.
He further said the Chief Minister has written to Ministry of Forests and Environment for the extraction of agar trees from various areas of the State.
He said mass agar tree plantation will also cover the Kamjong Ningthi range, Imphal East, Imphal West, Jiribam among others.
He opined that planting the trees will enable the villagers to earn livelihood, boost economy of the State and further help in conserving the environment.
