International Human Rights Day observed across the State

Bishnupur/Jiri, December 10 2017: With the rest of the world observing International Human Rights Day, Manipur too observed the day honouring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights .

International Human Rights Day is observed to honour the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948 .

As the State observed the day, Bishnupur district today observed International Human Rights Day with a grand musical concert performed by Tapta .

United NGOs Mission Manipur, North East Dialogue Forum, Youth Forum for Protection of Human Rights, Women Action Forum, Bishnupur, New Life Foundation, Manipur, Child Line Bishnupur and Lions Club of Moirang with 21 Self Help Groups of Bishnupur district organised the event .

The observation was attended by youth, widows, volunteers of many civil societies and organizations, victims and survivors of various atrocities, orphans and intellectuals from across the State.

A mass rally demanding repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 was also organised.

A public meeting was later organised at Konjengbam MAning Leikai Community Hall .

Intellectuals and resource persons namely, Principal, Oinam Law College, I Jugeshwor Singh, Advocate, W Lata Devi, Director, Child Line, L Pishak Singh and Director HRA, Babloo Loitongbam spoke on the topics Domestic violence, Acts and Crime against Women in Manipur, International Humanitarian Laws and its Application in India, Conflict and Violence and its impact on Children and AFSPA 1958 and its impact in North-East .

Speaking at the event L Pishak Singh stressed the need to repeal AFSPA from the State, pointing out that the Act is the main cause of unrest in the State .

Legal Aid Clinic, Kumbi College, Society for Disable Persons, Manipur, State Platform Manipur and District Social Welfare, Manipur under Manipur Legal Service Authority and Bishnupur Legal Service Authority observed International Human Rights Day and International Day of Disable Persons at Kumbi Lai Achouba .

MLA Kumbi, S Bira Singh, Child Welfare Officer, GOM, L Dhaneshwor, Advocate Th Shudhir Meitei, Associate Prof, Kumbi College, L Gopal Singh and president, Society of Disable Person, Manipur, Kh Shyamkishor Singh attended the event as presidium members .

In the same line, Campaign for Social Upliftment (CSU), Jiribam district also observed International Human Rights Day at Jiribam Higher Secondary School today .

Superintendent of Police, Jiribam, M Mubi Singh, Advisor, CSU Jiribam, S Maniton Singh, Addl SP (Ops), K Ajit Kumar Sharma, SDPO, Jiribam, RK Charles Principal, Jiribam Government Higher Secondary School, L Ranjit Kumar Singh and Retd DI of school, Ch Sunamani Singh attended the observation programme as presidium members .

Secretary, Campaign for Social Upliftment, Kangleipak, Jiribam district, M Nimolini Devi spoke on the importance of the day and addressed various human rights issues .

Various resource persons namely Lecturer LMS, Law College Imphal, Dr Sapam Dilip Kumar,Associate Prof Dept of History and Coordinator, Centre for Human Rights and Education, Damdei College, Taloulong Motbung, M Gangte and Associate Prof Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus Manipur, Dr Homen Thangjam spoke on various topics of Human Rights .

Dr Homen Thangjam spoke on the three generations of Human Rights- First-generation Blue rights, Second-generation Red rights and Third-generation Green rights .

First-generation, "civil-political" rights deals with liberty and participation in political life .

Second-generation, "socio-economic" human rights guarantees equal conditions and treatment .

Third-generation, "collective-developmental" talks of rights of peoples and groups .

RK Charles stressed on the Constitutional rights and duties enshrined in the Constitution .

He appealed people to know and demand their rights and at the same time do the duties one should do .

K Ajitkumar emphasised on the needs of spreading awareness on rights, so as to bring personal and social development .

A Ranjt Singh stressed on the downsides of not knowing one’s own rights.
