Imphal, April 05 2025:
In observance of World Aquatic Animal Day, a talk program was organised at Imphal College by Students for Development (SFD), Manipur, with support from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Manipur, to raise awareness on the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems and the profound impact of human activities on aquatic life.
In a release, SFD state incharge Dr Aribam Indira informed that the keynote speaker, Manipur University Department of Zoology professor Ksh Birla, emphasised the critical role aquatic ecosystems play in sustaining life on Earth.
He shed light on how unchecked human interference - such as pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change - is endangering aquatic biodiversity.
Of particular concern, he noted, is the alarming degradation and near-extinction of traditional ethnic fish species in Loktak Lake, a vital aquatic heritage of Manipur, due to climate-induced changes.
The event also echoed the philosophical message of 'Sarve Bhavantu Sukhi-naha'may all that exist be happyreminding participants of their shared responsibility toward preserving all forms of life.
In the closing note, the audience was encouraged to recognise that every student has the potential to be a brand ambassador for environmental change, and that the time to act is now, it said.
The release further stated that programme witnessed participation from students across various departments of the college, making it a successful step forward in nurturing ecological consciousness and youth-driven environmental stewardship.
