Imphal, April 15 2026:
Fifteen progressive farmers from Manipur left for Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, on Wednesday to learn advanced cultivation techniques for makhana (Thangjing), a nutrient-rich aquatic crop with strong global and local demand.
Commissioner cum Secretary (Horticulture & Soil Conservation) Thaithuilung Pamei flagged off the group from the department's Sanjenthong office.
The six-day exposure visit is organised by the Manipur Makhana Development Agency (MMDA) under the Central Sector Scheme for the Development of Makhana in Manipur.
Speaking at the event, T Pamei said Thangjing has been traditionally cultivated in Manipur for generations and is a popular, nutrient-dense food.
He stressed the need to shift from traditional to scientific methods to boost production and strengthen the local economy.
He added that MMDA, under the National Makhana Board, has begun implementing schemes to enhance cultivation and introduce advanced technologies to local farmers.
T Pamei expressed hope that insights from the tour will give new impetus to Thangjing farming in the State.
MIDH Mission Director Chungong Pamei highlighted Manipuri Thangjing's worldclass quality, noting its cancer-fighting properties and export potential beyond local markets.
Khupsorel Koireng, Additional Director of Horticulture & Soil Conservation, and Bikram Yumlembam, Officer-in-charge of MIDH, were also present at the flagging-off ceremony.
