Imphal, March 12 2026:
Residents of Uripok in Imphal West district are at grave risk from Nambul River erosion due to the prolonged delay in constructing a crucial retaining wall, local leaders warned today.
The Ward Number 6 United Club, Uripok, submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand yesterday, pressing for urgent action to prevent a potential monsoon disaster.
They followed up with a press conference at the Uripok Huidrom Leikai Development Committee Community Hall.
Ward Number 6 United Club general secretary Ningthoujam Thanil highlighted years of escalating threats from rising water levels and riverbank erosion during monsoons.
Without a retaining wall, nearby homes, roads, and infrastructure remain highly vulnerable to flooding and damage, he said.
Despite repeated pleas from residents and civil society groups, the Water Resources Department has failed to act, Thanil alleged.
He invoked Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, stressing the State's duty to protect life and property.
The club urged the Chief Minister to prioritize the wall's construction and held the department accountable for any future floods, erosion, or water-related disasters.
