Imphal, March 09 2026:
The Manipur Bonsai Association (MBA) marked its first Foundation Day today with a ceremony held at the Bonsai Gallery in Awang Potsangbam Khullen.
The event began with offerings of flowers and fruits to the departed members of MBA .
The celebration was attended by several senior advisors of the association who served as presidium members, including Laishram Ibopishak Singh, Dr Leishangthem Arke Singh, Wahengbam Brajabidhu Singh, Thokchom Dimvajit Singh, and Kanjam Mangi Singh.
According to MBA vice president Kangjam Homen Singh, the association was established as a platform for bonsai practitioners to connect and get acquainted with each other.
The association officially has 62 registered members from various areas, including Ukhrul, Noney, and Senapati.
The primary objective of the association is to propagate the art of bonsai and foster collective growth among its members.
Despite its recent establishment, the MBA has actively promoted the art of cultivating miniature trees by organizing World Bonsai Day celebrations and planning workshops for those interested in learning the craft.
Homen Singh highlighted the significant time investment required for bonsai cultivation, noting that it takes 20 to 30 years to develop a single bonsai plant.
He explained that the selling price often reflects the effort put into its creation.
While this art form offers a viable livelihood option in other countries with established markets, Manipur currently lacks a proper market for bonsai plants.
The economic conditions in the region also make it challenging to sell bonsai plants at a high price point.
Elaborating on the nature of the art, Homen Singh emphasized that bonsai cultivation cannot be taught merely by demonstration, unlike painting or dancing.
It is an art form that requires lifelong dedication and meticulous care to maintain the plant's health and structure.
He also cautioned that many online tutorials focus solely on styling, but practical experience is essential for true mastery.
The approach to bonsai cultivation varies greatly depending on individual preferences and the availability of resources.
