Imphal, June 14 2015 :
Police are allegedly extorting illegal tax on vehicles plying along Imphal-Jiribam road, also known as National Highway 37, causing frequent stand-off with drivers.
Disclosing this to Hueiyen Lanpao on Sunday, sources in the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers & Motors Workers Union informed that the union is all set to approach Home Minister Gaikhangam to seek action against erring police officials.
Union general secretary M Anil Meetei said the police at every check-post are charging extra money on all trucks moving on the highway, ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 500 .
The CID personnel at Jiribam are also taking Rs 50 from every truck, he said.
"If drivers protest, they are subjected to beatings by the police.
We're facing such awkward situation every day," Anil alleged.
It may be recalled that some weeks back the home minister had disclosed his mobile number through which members of the public could lodge complaints against erring police personnel.
He also said the Makru bridge along the highway is now in a bad condition and that it has become a vulnerable point.
Besides, a section of the highway measuring about 3 km near Makru bridge is also now in dilapidated condition, he said.
Anil drew the attention of the authorities to the fact that the road stretch as well as the Makru bridge have now been left beyond motorable condition.
