- On July 22: A meeting was held at Tungjoy and decided to guard the village by themselve as there are no security personnel in the village .
With tensions along the Manipur-Nagaland border rising in the wake of renewed land dispute between Tungjoy village under Senapati district of Manipur and Khenzhakheno village under Phek district of Nagaland, the state government sent in additional forces to Tungjoy yesterday to deal with the charged situation.
The additional forces comprising Manipur Police and IRB personnel were sent in Tungjoy village after the rising tension and the need for protection of the villagers from any unwanted incidents were discussed in a public meeting held at Tungjoy village a few days back.
In the latest incident of conflict between the two neightbouring border villages, in the afternoon of July 21, around 50 armed villagers reportedly crossed over the border along with personnel of Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) entered into the land of Tungjoy at Zekhao and abducted three farmers.
They were, however, released afterward but only after being beaten up black and blue.
Since then, the situation along the border area has remained tense.
Taking serious note over the incident, Tungjoy villagers convened a joint meeting on July 22.During the meeting it was decided that 60 villagers would volunteer themselves to guard the village.
Whenever any villager has to go for farming or any other purposes, he/she is to be accompanied by the volunteers and it would be the sole responsibility of the individuals concerned in the event of any untoward incident happening if they go out without the volunteers.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Timothy, a villager of Tungjoy village informed that there are no VDF personnel in the village and so the villagers themselves decided to guard and protect the village.
Timothy further informed that earlier the tension over land dispute was between Tungjoy and Khenzhakheno.
But now, Tunggam, a village of Manipur bordering Nagaland and Khetemon in Nagaland have joined in, with both siding with Khenzhakheno.
Though a village in Manipur, it is unfortunate that Tunggam has sided with the Nagaland village.
Since ancient times, villagers from Khenzhakheno have been creating problem in Tungjoy and the villagers of Tunggam know this very well.
So, under such circumstances, it is despicable on the part of Tunggam villagers to side with Khenzhakheno, Timothy observed.
He also alleged that villagers of Tunggam have destroyed all the cabbages grown in Tungjoy village.
It may be noted here that giving a new twist to the age-old land dispute between Tungjoy and Khenzhakheno, Tunggam claims ownership over Proulailai, the dispute site and charged villagers of Tungjoy with destroying water pipelines.
