PREPAK shares thoughts on violence against women

Imphal, November 24 2014: The proscribed PREPAK has expressed deep concern over the rising graph of violence against women.

Endorsing the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25), the outfit asserted that violence against women not only denies social justice but also poses a regressive threat to human civilization.

A statement issued by the outfit's assistant secretary, publicity and propaganda LeibakNgakpa Luwang asserted that the soaring crime rate against women in Kangleipak (Manipur) demands serious introspection.

Till November 10 this year, 40 women have been raped while 61 others were murdered.

These included 16 cases of controversial deaths.

Out of 24 women killed in the most brutal manner, four were below 10.They were murdered after being raped.

Of the 40 women raped till November 10 this year, 13 were below 10 years and 26 of them were raped by young boys below 18.These figures are clear indications of the worsening degree of anti-social and unlawful activities.

These figures again pointed out the inability to control the anti-social and criminal activities.

As reported in India, there were 287 cases of crime against women between January and November 10 this year, the outfit quoted.

The corresponding figures for the previous years were 78 in 2010, 166 in 2011, 304 in 2012 and 285 in 2013 .

Apart from enacting the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, India is a signatory to the UN's Convention on all forms of discrimination against women.

However, the Government of India has not implemented the principles and agreements of the convention in the patriarchal Indian society.

On account of this failure on the part of the Government of India, violence against women has been rising at an alarming rate in the country.

According to the National Crime Record Bureau, 5632 culprits were punished against the 24,206 rape cases reported in 2011 in India.

Underscoring the urgent need to check this abominable trend, the outfit asserted that violence against women can be controlled only when women are empowered enough, politically and economically.

The outfit also emphasised on the need to bring about an impartial system of governance in order to effectively check violence against women.
