Imphal, November 07 2026:
With Ningol Chakkouba shopping picking up pace in Imphal, the State Office of Legal Metrology conducted a 4-day drive to check and verify scales, meters and weights at the Khwairamband Ima Keithel and other major markets across valley districts.
During the drive which lasted four days from November 4 to 7, the officials found many vendors tampering and manipulating scales and weights for profit.
Speaking to this paper, Imphal West district's Assistant Inspector (Office of Legal Metrology), Konjengbam Michael said that the drive was launched to check and verify weights and measures being used by vendors in view of the upcoming Ningol Chak-kouba festival on November 11 .

By carrying out the drive, the office sought to enforce standards of weights and measures, ensure accuracy in commercial transactions, and protect consumer rights under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, said the Inspector.
At Khwairamband Ima Keithel, Michael said, the office opened a counter where weights and measures were verified and certificates were issued to vendors after verifications.
During the drive at the Khwairamband Ima Keithel, many vendors were found tampering with weights to reduce their mass, he said.
While the inspection team also found many using the right/standard weights, many were found manipulating scales and weights to reduce mass for profit, he said.
Many of the weights were found carved out and filled with cardboards and threads, and carefully concealed using paints to reduce mass and take advantage of unsuspecting consumers, Michael said.
Many of the tampered weights were found to be 200 or 300 grams below their respective standard masses, he said, adding that such manipulations of the weights are illegal.
At the counter opened at the Keithel, all the scales and weights were checked and verified, and those which were found meeting the standard measures were stamped with a seal of the Office of Legal Metrology.
More than 200 certificates were issued to vendors after verifications, Michael said.
The Office of Legal Metrology will continue to conduct such inspections in the future also, Michael added.
